Maintenance units of the Russian army

Until now I knew hardly any details about the repair units of the Red Army in WW2. But obviously they already existed. By chance, I came across a page that showed many details I didn't know. Together with the site O5m6.de, where some vehicles were also shown, I was able to realize further models based on the ZIS-5.

Today I am presenting my new models on this subject:

  • Parm II based on the ZIS-6, open version
  • Parm II based on the ZIS-6, closed version
  • Parm I based on the ZIS-5
  • Repair trailer
  • Water trailer

The vehicles are all based on real models.

1/144 ZIS-6 crane truck of the Russian army

Today I am presenting another crane. This time it is a crane truck of the Russian army. The Russian army had built the crane on the basis of the ZIS-5. It was probably used by pioneer units, especially for ferry and bridge construction.

The extended ZIS-5 with 3 axles served as the carrier vehicle. I was able to realize the superstructure according to a drawing.  Although I was not able to depict all the details in 1/144, the crane arm is perforated in the original, I was still able to realize the beautiful impression of the original.

The crane truck was also used by the Wehrmacht, and I found some photos of it on the Internet. That's why I painted my first crane truck in Wehrmacht gray. I will paint the next version in Russian green.

The crane superstructure can be rotated and the boom can also be adjusted.

The support of the arm needs to be higher, I will correct this with the next print.

41/52 Bailey Bridge in 1/144 Diorama

 Bailey Bridge in 1/144

Bailey Bridge in 1/144

Today I present another model from my last order. The American Bailey Bridge. The kit consists of exactly three parts. The bridge and the two ramps at the end. The bridge comes as a reinforced version, i.e. the girders are double on each side.

Eisenwoher is said to have described the Bailey Bridge as one of the most important developments to win the war against Germany.

The Bailey Bridge consists of several different elements, but all of them could still be carried and moved by humans.

To represent the bridge, I have built a small diorama, which shows an American tank unit crossing a river in Italy.

 https://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Waffen/Sturmboot.htm

Anh. 108

erster Druck, mit tollen Details,

Sturmboote leider zu kurz,
German Sturmboots but too short

Wer will kann dies nachträglich reinschneiden.

Some remarks about my designs

In some photos, the special trailer still had a wheel in the middle at the back, probably to facilitate loading and unloading. This could be adjusted in height. This is missing on mine.

The assault boat with the closed superstructure probably had a recess in the back for the engine. This was then closed with a tarpaulin. This gave the impression of a closed surface. I have the superstructure completely closed, I had too few details to draw this exactly. Whoever wants to can cut this in later.

The outboard engine was probably hooked into the rear wall. I could not find the mechanism, so I just glued the motor.

Sturmboot of the German Wehrmacht with outboard engine in 1/144

Actually the Sturmboot is long overdue. But since the original consisted practically only of curved surfaces, I had a hard time with it. Then came the solution; directly near me is a replica of the German assault boat. Directly on the Rhine was a replica of the assault boat, as it was probably also used by the Swiss army. So the construction was much easier, but I still had to go there twice, until the Sturmboot looked like a Sturmboot. Curved surfaces will never be my favorite subject. But the first prints were very nice, especially because the fine ribbing in the interior is also very good to see. I could have saved a lot of work on the outboard engine, as some details simply fall by the print restrictions in 1/144 and are not recognizable. The assault boats were simply used everywhere and there is enough evidence that they were also used with camouflage patterns (similar to the Kriegsmarine). I will use my assault boats especially for the Siebel ferries and the navy Prahms. In the next days the next printings will come back, at the first printing I made a mistake, the boats were only 25mm long instead of 41.67mm. But then there are both versions, the open and the closed version. Further down you can see that also the Sd. Anh. 108 is already in the making, but it will probably come after Christmas. All have some minor mistakes as I had to make them printable in 1/144.

The set comes with 6 pieces together with the engines.

1/144 Sonderkraftfahrzeug 9 oder kurz Famo mit 40 ton Winde // Famo with 40 ton winch 23/52

Famo, special field conversion with 40 ton winch

From time to time I visit in the internet this WWII forum. It is always my number one for inspiration and for research for my projects. So I found there only one picture, but immediately I liked what I saw.  In Russia the Wehrmacht converted a Sdkfz. 9, a so called Famo to a special recovery vehicle. They removed the platform and everything else and added, mostly from a Bergepanther, a 40 ton winch to recover tanks on the battlefield. As I have an existing Famo design, it was easy to stip it down and to add a 40 ton winch, like the one, used on the Bergepanthers. As there are no more details and information, I added what I thought, makes sense. If you like to read about the original version, here you can do it:

I added the winch to the Famo; fitted it into the frame. I m not sure if the Famo really had a spade, but i added it, so that it looked a bit better. Pulling a tank with a 40 ton winch, it makes much more sense. The picture says, that the unit saw action in Russia, so most probably, the half track would be in Wehrmacht grey. I went with Wehrmacht yellow, what I like a bit more, but this is up to you.

Here you can see my design fresh from the printer.

If you like the design, here you can buy it:

Der Zusammenbau / assembly

There is not much to assemble. Cut of the spade and add it to the two pins at the end of the frame. With a bit experience it can be moved.

the Faun LK 5 comes with several add. parts for working and travel position // Der Faun kann in Arbeits und Fahrtstellung dargestellt werden

English version
Faun LK 5 German Wehrmacht crane

Once I had designed the Faun tank transporter, I had the wish to get the Faun crane as well. But with the functionality I had some questions I could not answer. But then I found on the internet an assembly guide with lot of detailed pictures, which gave me all needed answers.
Starting, building up the crane parts, bringing everything to the needed material strengths and done. Sounds too good and it ended in a disaster, the crane and the Faun cabin with the frame misfitted.
So I had to go back to the start, checking all sources ans trying to find the problem. The Faun cabin was the problem, for the Faun they used an extended cabin and the wheel basis was a different one as well. On a German forum for trucks and construction machines I found the correct dimensions, so that I could adapt the wheels and the distances between the axis.
Some comments about the Faun, the Wehrmacht used the Faun in two versions:
1. Faun LK 5 only for the roads
2. Faun LK 5, convertible to be used on rails as well

At the moment I will offer only the road version, as the railway version needs some more changes. If the first prototype works well, I can offer you the model by mid of may.

Mercedes MB 4500 S Werkstatt Set // Mercedes 4500 S repair shop 10/52

Mercedes repair shop with power unit

After some weeks of inactivity, I proudly show you a new set. For the field repair shops the Wehrmachts used the repiar body with mainly two different trucks. Either the Mercedes 4500S or the Büssing 4500. As the Büssing cabin is still under construction, I offer the Mercedes with the repair body and a small power unit. The power unit was used to produce the power to be able to weld outside in the field.
