Am Wochenende war ich auf der französischen Seite des Rheins. Dort gab es bei einem Wassersportverein einen Tag der offenen Tür. Aber der war Nebensache, denn ich sass direkt neben einem Bunker im Gras. Im ersten Augenblick sah man ihn nicht, da der Wassersportverein ihn schön angestrichen hat und eine kleine Kabine auf das Dach gesetzt hat. Trotz der grossen Hitze bin ich dann etwas am Rhein entlang gelaufen und im Bereich von nur wenigen Kilometern habe ich noch weitere Bunker entdeckt. Einige sind leider komplett zugewuchert, andere ziemlich verfallen. Dennoch gabe es aber auch noch ein paar sehenswerte Exemplare. Zum Schluss gab es dann sogar noch ein deutsches Gegenstück. Dieser ist hie ich später herausgefunden habe, sogar noch recht gut erhalten. Leider war er auch Schauplatz eine Kriegsverbrechens zum Ende des Krieges. Die Besatzung eines englischen Bombers wurde abgeschossen und die Überlebenden erschossen.

I was on the French side of the Rhine at the weekend. There was an open day at a water sports club. But that was a minor matter, because I was sitting in the grass right next to a bunker. You couldn't see it at first because the watersports club had painted it nicely and put a small cabin on the roof. Despite the heat, I walked along the Rhine for a while and discovered more bunkers within a few kilometers. Unfortunately, some of them were completely overgrown, others quite dilapidated. Nevertheless, there were still a few worth seeing. Finally, there was even a German counterpart. As I found out later, this one is still quite well preserved. Unfortunately, it was also the scene of a war crime at the end of the war. The crew of an English bomber was shot down and the survivors shot.

Ein neues Modell des amerikanischen Sherman Panzers wollte ich nicht zeichnen, den Panzer gibt es von so ziemlich allen Herstellern und auch mit allen möglichen Türmen und Bewaffnungsvarianten. Und doch, mir fehlte etwas. Zur Vorbereitung der Landung in der Normandie wurden Sherman Panzer mit Aufsätzen über den Motorraumlüftungen versehen. Diese Schnorchel erlaubte es, die Panzer bereits früh am Stand im eigentlich noch zu tiefen Wasser anzulanden. Nachdem die Panzer den Stand erreicht hatten, wurden diese Aufsätze dann wieder abgenommen. Beim Suchen nach Vorbildern fand ich dann aber eine weitere Variante, die viele Fragen aufwarf. Für den Sherman gab es einen Anbausatz, damit dieser mit einer Räumschaufel ausgestattet werden konnte. Diese wurde seitlich angebaut und konnte über einen Zylinder an der Front gehoben werden. Hier sieht man die Kombination von beidem, also das Räumschild und die Lüftungsschächte. Ob dies wirklich je so zum Einsatz kam, kann ich nicht sagen, es gab wohl an D-Day 321 Shermans mit Räumschaufel, ob diese aber auch mit den Aufsätzen versehen wurden, ich bin mir nicht sicher. Aber das Modell sieht einfach mit beiden Kombinationen super aus, weshalb ich dann mal ein Auge zudrücke und sage, ja, an meinem Strandabschnitt kam sowas zum Einsatz. 

Als Grundmodell diente mir ein Sherman von Revell. Die beiden Zusätze habe ich mir drucken lassen und nur noch anmalen und fertig.

I didn't want to draw a new model of the American Sherman tank, which is available from pretty much every manufacturer and with all kinds of turrets and armament variants. And yet, I was missing something. In preparation for the Normandy landings, Sherman tanks were fitted with attachments over the engine compartment vents. These snorkels made it possible to land the tanks early on the beach in water that was actually still too deep. After the tanks had reached the stand, these attachments were then removed again. While searching for prototypes, I found another variant that raised many questions. There was an attachment kit for the Sherman so that it could be fitted with a clearing shovel. This was attached to the side and could be lifted via a cylinder at the front. Here you can see the combination of both, the dozer blade and the ventilation shafts. I can't say whether this was ever really used in this way, there were probably Shermans with a dozer blade on D-Day 321, but I'm not sure whether these were also fitted with the attachments. But the model simply looks great with both combinations, which is why I'll turn a blind eye and say, yes, something like this was used on my beach section. 

I used a Sherman from Revell as the basic model. I had the two add-ons printed and just painted them and that was it.

16/52 1/144 Narrow Gauge Diorama

Neues 1/144 Diorama für Schmalspurmodelle

Da ich in letzter Zeit einige Modelle für den Bereich Schmalspur gezeichnet habe,

wollte ich auch ein Diorama haben, um die Modelle entsprechend darstellen zu

können. Ausserdem konnte ich so auch gleich die neuen Gleise und Weichen

ausprobieren. Damit es gestalterisch auch etwas Abwechslung hat, sollte eine

Brücke dargestellt werden. Im Video sieht man jetzt, was dabei herausgekommen ist.

Das Modell zeigt einige meiner Modelle und verschiedene Lokomotiven, mittlerweile

habe ich so viele verschiedene Lokomotiven, dass ich die Namen nicht mehr genau

kenne. Die Brücke ist eine provisorische Holzkonstruktion geworden, so wie sie oft in

den letzten Weltkriegen verwendet worden war. Das Materiallager ist entstanden aus

allem, was ich so auf meinem Basteltisch noch rumfliegen hatte. Im Hafenbereich

wollte ich noch einen kleinen Peniche darstellen, doch der ist ins Wasser gefallen,

die beiden Entwürfen gefielen mir von den Proportionen her nicht.

New 1/144 diorama for narrow gauge models

As I have recently drawn some models for the narrow gauge range, I also wanted to

have a diorama to display the models accordingly. It also gave me the opportunity to

try out the new tracks and points. To add a bit of variety to the design, a bridge was

to be depicted. You can now see the result in the video. The model shows some of

my models and various locomotives; I now have so many different locomotives that I

no longer know their exact names. The bridge has become a temporary wooden

construction, as was often used in the last world wars. The material store was made

from everything I had lying around on my crafting table. I wanted to build a small

peniche (special type of a small French ship) in the harbor area, but that fell through

because I did not like the proportions of the two designs.

Die Überschrift ist nicht ganz richtig, weil seit dem Konkurs von Shapeways hatte ich ja keinen Shop mehr. Dann kam ja Shapeways und kündigte an, dass mit der Plattform thangs es wieder möglich sein solle einen Shop zu eröffnen. In den letzten Wochen hatte ich alles vorbereitet und am Montag kam die E-Mail von thangs, ich könne jetzt wieder einen Shop eröffnen und Modelle zum Druck dort anbieten. Leider kam ich aber nach kurzer Zeit zu dem Schluss, dass es keine Panzerfabrik 144 mehr geben wird. Thangs konzentriert sich auf den Verkauf von Dateien, der Druck ist zwar auch möglich, doch der Todesstoss war die Tatsache, dass ich als Shop- Besitzer eine jährliche Gebühr für meinen Shop zahlen müsste. Thangs würde also nicht nur Gewinn machen, mit der Auftragsabwicklung, sondern auch von mir noch Geld bekommen. Da ich mit meinen Modellen mich in einer sehr kleinen Nische des Modellbaus bewege, würde ich im Leben nicht auf einen grünen Zweig kommen.

Leider war es dies vorerst. Man soll zwar nie nie sagen, aber in der heutigen Kombination wird es zu keinem Relaunch der Panzerfabrik 144 kommen.

In den nächsten Wochen werde ich mir überlegen, was dies genau für meinen Blog bedeutet. Eventuell werde ich diesen dann auch etwas anpassen und neugestalten.

The headline isn't quite right because I haven't had a store since Shapeways went bankrupt. Then, Shapeways announced that it would be possible to open a store again using the Thangs platform. Over the last few weeks, I had prepared everything, and on Monday, I received an email from Thangs saying that I could open a store and offer models for printing there again. Unfortunately, I soon realised that Panzerfabrik 144 would not survive. Thangs focuses on selling files and also offers printing services. However, the final nail in the coffin was the fact that, as the store owner, I would have to pay an annual fee for my store. Not only would Thangs make a profit from processing orders, they would also receive money from me. As I operate in a very small model-making niche, I wouldn't be able to make a living.

Unfortunately, that's the end of the road for now. You should never say never, but there will be no relaunch of Panzerfabrik 144 in its current form.

Over the next few weeks, I will consider what this means for my blog. Perhaps I will redesign it.

Zwar schon etwas älter, aber irgendwie ist das Modell nie richtig fertig geworden. Die letzten Tage habe ich mich hingesetzt und mal wieder einen Schwung alter Modelle fertig angemalt.

13/52 neue Varianten auf Basis des ZIS 5

Neue Varianten auf Basis des ZIS 5 in 1/144

Es gibt noch einige Varianten, welche ich hier noch nicht vorgestellt habe. Leider bin ich erst jetzt dazu gekommen, die Modelle anzumalen.

Die neuen Modelle sind der

• ZIS 5 als Starterwagen für russische Flugzeuge
• ZIS 5 Feuerwehrwagen PMZ-2
• ZIS 5 Parm II mit Inneneinrichtung
• ZIS 12 mit Suchscheinwerfer

Die Feuerwehrausführung hat noch einen kleinen Fehler, das Ersatzrad hatte ich leider so platziert, dass es nach dem Druck nicht mehr leicht zu entfernen war. Dass muss ich noch korrigieren. Zum Schluss noch eine kleine Vorschau auf was ganz Neues.

12/52: New variants based on the ZIS-5 in the scale 1/144

There are still some variants that I have not yet presented here. I have only just managed to paint the models.

The new models are the

• ZIS 5 starter car for Russian aircrafts
• ZIS-5 fire engine PMZ-2
• ZIS-5 Parm II with an interior.
• ZIS 12 Searchlight

Unfortunately, there is a small mistake in the fire engine version. After printing, it was difficult to remove the spare wheel because I had placed it in the wrong way. I still need to correct this. At the end, you will find a preview for something totally new.

12/52 russische Landungsboote DB pr.165 - Landing Boat

Die beiden Modelle habe ich endlich mal fertig angemalt. Allerdings werden sie auf kein Diorama kommen. Die Grundform ist für beide das xxx.  Die erste Variante war als Transport und Landungsboot gedacht. Dazu wurde einfach eine Holzplattform aufgebaut und so der Transport von leichten Fahrzeugen ermöglicht. Die zweite Variante war als Begleitung solcher Transporte gedacht und diente der Luftsicherung gegen deutsche Tiefflieger.

I have finally finished painting these two models. However, they will not be on any diorama. The basic shape for both is the xxx.  The first variant was intended as a transport and landing craft. For this purpose, a wooden platform was simply built to enable the transportation of light vehicles. The second variant was intended to accompany such transports and was used for air defense against German low-flying aircraft.
