Rommels Caravan, oder das rollende Büro

Eigentlich wollte ich einen Wehrmachtsbus zeichnen und diesen dann als Gefechtsquartier mit Anhänger und so, darstellen. Da aber Busse so verdammt viele Rundungen haben und ich damit immer nur Probleme, bin ich auf einer meiner Lieblingseiten (https://www.o5m6.de/index.html) auf einen italienischen Anhänger gestossen. Diese Anhänger wurden wohl für italienische Generäle gebaut. In Afrika wurde ein solcher Anhänger dann Rommel von den Italienern geschenkt. Der Anhänger wurde dann später durch einen anderen General berühmt. wie lange Rommel den Anhänger nutzte, konnte ich nicht herausfinden. Berühmter als sein Anhänger sind ja Max und Moritz, zwei Kommandowagen, die Rommel von einem britischen General erbeutete.

Montgomery bzw. die 8. Army erbeutete von einem italienischen General dessen Anhänger und die Briten setzten dann diesen auf einen Leyland. Dieses Fahrzeug wurde dann später Monty`s Caravan genannt und er hatte ihn mit nach Europa genommen. Heute dann er im Imperial War Museum angesehen werden. In 1/72 bietet Revell dieses Set sogar als Bausatz an. Die Zahl der Originalfotos ist recht überschaubar, trotz intensiver Suche, konnte ich gerade 4 Fotos finden.

Das Modell kommt mit einigen Stühlen und 2 Tischen, so dass auch ein Gefechtsstand in der Wüste nachgebildet werden kann.

Rommel's caravan, or the rolling office

Actually, I wanted to draw a Wehrmacht bus and then depict it as battle quarters with trailer and such. But since buses have so damn many curves and I always just have problems with them, I came across an Italian trailer on one of my favorite sites (https://www.o5m6.de/index.html). These trailers were probably built for Italian generals. In Africa, such a trailer was then given to Rommel by the Italians. The trailer was later made famous by another general. How long Rommel used the trailer, I could not find out. More famous than his trailer are Max and Moritz, two command cars that Rommel captured from a British general.

Montgomery / the 8th Army captured the trailer of an Italian general and the British put it on a Leyland truck. This vehicle was later called Monty`s Caravan and he took it with him to Europe. Today it can be seen in the Imperial War Museum. In 1/72 Revell even offers this set as a kit. The number of original photos is quite manageable, despite intensive search, I could find just 4 photos.

The model comes with some chairs and 2 tables, so a command post in the desert can also be recreated.

25/52 neuer Eisenbahnwagon SSYs mit Flak 88 mm // German Flak railway waggon

Auf einer französischen Seite fand ich die Vorlage für das neue Modell. Einen 50 ton Schwerlastwaggon der Reichsbahn, auf dem eine 88 mm Flak montiert war. Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich um eine Improvisiation, da es nur wenige Fotos gibt, und spätere Modelle der Bedienmannschaft mehr Platz zum Bedienen des Geschützes boten. Bei dieser Version muss es extrem eng gewesen sein, es gab offensichtlich keine seitlichen Plattformen, die mehr Platz beim Schiessen geboten hätten. Auf der französischen Steite wird der Nachbau mit der Kreuzlafette der Flak gezeigt. Grundsätzlich ist dies nicht ausgeschlossen, es gibt Fotos von einer 88 mm Flak mit der Kreuzlafette, doch warum noch zusätzlich die Kreuzlafette verwenden, diese hätte nur im Weg gestanden. Daher habe ich mich dazu entschlossen diese wegzulassen. Es könnte natürlich auch sein, dass diese mit Holzbohlen überbaut worden war. Wenn jemand mehr hierzu weiss, ich bin offen für andere Ideen. Das Modell kommt wie fast immer mit beweglichen Teilen, wobei die Flak dieses Mal nur drehbar sein wird. Leider muss ich bis zum Druck noch etwas warten, für eine Bestellung habe ich noch nicht genügen neue Modelle zusammen.

On a French site I found the pattern for the new model. A 50 ton heavy duty wagon of the Reichsbahn, on which a 88 mm Flak was mounted. Probably it is an improvisation, because there are only few photos, and later models offered more space for the crew to operate the gun. On this version it must have been extremely cramped, there were obviously no side platforms that would have provided more space when firing. On the French site the replica is shown with the cross mount of the flak. In principle this is not impossible, there are photos of an 88 mm flak with the cross mount, but why use the cross mount in addition, it would only have stood in the way. Therefore I decided to omit it. Of course, it could also be that it was built over with wooden planks. If anyone knows more about this, I am open to other ideas. The model comes as almost always with moving parts, but this time the flak will only be rotatable. Unfortunately I have to wait a bit until printing, for an order I don't have enough new models together yet.

2 neue Varianten des Sd. Kfz. 8, Sonderausführung und Zugmaschine

Klar jetzt denkt jeder an die Bunkerknackerversion mit der 8.8 Flak hinten drauf. Doch nein, ich dachte da eher an die Version, die für die Reichspost gebaut worden war und dann später bei den Wehrmachtssendern verwendet wurde. Wie immer, gab mir Holgers Seite die wichtigsten Infos, es gab wohl etwas über 15 Fahrzeuge, die mit einem geschlossenen Führerhaus versehen worden waren. Von diesen Versionen hat keine den Krieg überlebt, bzw. existiert heute noch. Den Standard-Typ gibt es sogar noch in einer oder zwei fahrbereiten Versionen. Daher habe ich zunächst mal diese Version gezeichnet, da dann der Umbau wesentlich leichter ist. Das Innenleben des Aufbaus ist leider reine Spekulation, da es keine Angaben oder Fotos davon gibt. Ich habe mich daher dafür entschieden, einen Holzboden und das war es dann.

2 new variants of the Sd. Kfz. 8, special version and tractor

Sure now everybody thinks of the bunker buster version with the 8.8 Flak on the back. But no, I was thinking more of the version that was built for the Reichspost and then later used for the Wehrmacht transmitters. As always, Holger's site gave me the most important info, there were probably a little over 15 vehicles that had been fitted with a closed cab. None of these versions survived the war, or still exist today. The standard type even still exists in one or two roadworthy versions. Therefore I drew this version first, because then the conversion is much easier. The interior of the body is unfortunately pure speculation, since there are no details or photos of it. I have therefore decided to a wooden floor and that was it.

schwerer Tieflader 150 ton der Wehrmacht

Die Idee kam mir, als ich wegen den Culemeyer Tiefladern am Suchen war. Vorgestellt habe ich das Modell bereits hier. Jetzt ist es auch fertig angemalt und ich gebe es zum Verkauf frei. Da sich ein netter Mensch bei mir gemeldet hat, konnte ich dank seiner Hilfe noch einige Fehler korrigieren, die sich bei mir eingeschlichen hatten. Die werden aber dann mit der Freigabe alle korrigiert sein.

Den Unterbau für das Geschützrohr habe ich mit Steichhölzern gebaut, die kommen bei solchen Abmessungen dann wieder recht gut hin. Das Original wurde wohl hauptsächlich beim Bau des Atlanitik-Walls eingesetzt und diente zum Transport schwerer Teile, wie Bunkerkuppeln, Geschütze und anderer schwerer Brocken.

The idea came to me when I was looking for the Culemeyer low loaders. I have already presented the model here. Now it is painted and I release it for sale. Since a nice person contacted me, I was able to correct some errors that had crept in with me thanks to his help. They will all be corrected with the release.

The substructure for the gun barrel I built with sticks, they come with such dimensions then again quite well. The original was probably mainly used in the construction of the Atlanitik Wall and served to transport heavy parts, such as bunker domes, guns and other heavy lumps.

Die letzte Bestellung von Shapeways ist eingetroffen und ich habe auch schon angefangen, einige der neuen Modelle zu bemalen. Besonders vorstellen, will ich aber noch schnell die Variante des 30,5 cm Mörsers. Als Fertigmodell habe ich ihn ja schon gezeigt (hier). Doch jetzt ist auch das Set mit den Anhängern und dem Mörser im zerlegten Zustand gekommen. Dabei ist es möglich, die Anhänger und die Beladung sperat zu bemalen und zu verwenden. Ein Zusammenbau zu einem kompletten Modell ist aber nicht möglich. Das Ganze besteht dann aus zwei Sets, einmal die Zugmaschinen Tatra und dann ein Set mit den vier Anhängern und den zerlegten Teilen des Mörsers.

 1/144 Skoda Mortar 30,5 cm M16 Update

The last order from Shapeways arrived and I already started to paint some of the new models. But I especially want to introduce the variant of the 30,5 cm mortar. I have already shown it as a finished model (here). But now the set with the trailers and the mortar in disassembled condition has arrived. Thereby it is possible to paint and use the trailers and the loading separately. But an assembly to a complete model is not possible. The whole then consists of two sets, once the tractors Tatra and then a set with the four trailers and the disassembled parts of the mortar.

Mal wieder ein Schiff! Nachdem ich in den letzten Wochen ja sehr viele Projekte im Bereich Schmalspur und Eisenbahn verwirklicht hatte, wollte ich was Neues zeichnen. Angefangen hatte ich mit einem U-Boot, das war innerhalb von ein paar Stunden auch schon fast fertig. Nur das Endstück trieb mich in den Wahnsinn weil ich die Form nicht hinbekam. Irgendwie geht es nicht. Vor lauter Frust ging ich meine Liste der noch zu zeichnenden Modelle durch, beim Sturmboottransporter blieb ich hängen. Das geschlossene Sturmboot hatte ich ja schon und der Sturmboottransporter wurde insgesamt 3 oder 4 mal gebaut. Es gibt zwar nicht so viele Fotos von Original, aber! es gibt einen Film. Der Originalfilm über das Siebelkommando und dessen Entwicklungen, zeigt auch den Sturmboottransporter. Zusammen mit einigen Skizzen und Illustrationen im Forum Marinearchiv, habe ich angefangen das Modell zu zeichnen. Aktuell bin ich zwar nicht nicht ganz fertig, aber es sollte schon erkennbar sein, wie in etwa das Modell später aussehen wird. Assault boat transporter in 1/144

Again a ship! After I had realized many projects in the area of narrow gauge and railroads in the last weeks, I wanted to draw something new. I started with a submarine, which was almost finished within a few hours. Only the end piece drove me crazy because I couldn't get the shape right. Somehow it does not work. Frustrated, I went through my list of models to draw and got stuck on the assault boat transporter. I already had the closed assault boat and the assault boat transporter was built 3 or 4 times. There are not so many photos of original, but! there is a film. The original film about the Siebel Command and its developments, also shows the assault boat transporter. Together with some sketches and illustrations in the Forum Marinearchiv, I started to draw the model. Currently I am not completely finished, but it should already be recognizable, how the model will look like later. The drawings can be found here, together with further technical details.

So jetzt habe ich rechtzeitig für die nächste Bestellung bei Shapeways auch noch den Anhänger für den Biber fertig gestellt. Der Anhänger an sich, ist ja nichts Besonderes, doch das Gestänge für die Plane war etwas tricky. Die Stangen sollten sich schon mittig treffen und durften nicht zu klein sein, damit sie beim Reinigen nach dem Drucken auch nicht brechen. Ein weiteres Problem, wenn das Gestänge auf dem Anhänger ist, bekommt man das U-Boot nicht mehr darunter. Also musste es vom Druck her so angepasst werden, dass man das U-Boot erst und dann das Gestänge ankleben kann.

Macht leider die Druckkosten etwas höher, da ich ja den benötigten Raum mitbezahle. Aktuell kommt der Anhänger ohne das U-Boot, ohne Zugmaschine. Bei Bedarf kann ich aber auch gerne ein Set mit einer entsprechenden Zugmaschine anbieten. Das U-Boot funktioniert leider noch nicht so ganz, der Turm stimmt noch nicht und am Heck habe ich noch viel zu dünne Elemente. Mal sehen, ob ich es doch noch hinbekomme.

So now I have finished the trailer for the Beaver in time for the next order at Shapeways. The trailer itself is nothing special, but the rods for the canvas were a bit tricky. The poles should meet in the middle and should not be too small, so that they do not break when cleaning after printing. Another problem, when the linkage is on the trailer, you can't get the submarine under it. So it had to be adjusted from the print so that you can glue the sub first and then the linkage.

Unfortunately, this makes the printing costs a little higher, since I pay for the required space. Currently, the trailer comes without the submarine, without tractor. But if needed, I can offer a set with a corresponding tractor. The submarine doesn't work yet, the turret isn't right yet and at the stern I still have much too thin elements. Let's see if I can still get it right.
